Is a Scottish wedding recognized overseas?
Yes, a legally-conducted Scottish wedding is recognized in most countries around the world. Whether you plan to travel or move abroad, rest assured—a Scottish marriage certificate is typically accepted by most international authorities, including those in the USA, Canada, Australia, and throughout the European Union. If you have a particular destination in mind, it's always wise to check with local authorities, but Scottish legal weddings are generally welcomed with open arms and smiling officials!
Q: What is the telephone number of Gretna Green registry office.
A: Telephone 030 33 33 3000
(Please note: I make the wedding rings for your Gretna Green wedding, I do not arrange your wedding. You need to contact the registry office to do this.)
Q: Do we have to live in Scotland before our wedding takes place?
A: Not at all! You don’t need to be living in Scotland to get married here. As long as your M10 marriage forms are submitted to the registrar at least 29 working days before your wedding, you’re free to arrive just in time for your big day. Many couples travel from all over the world to wed at Gretna Green, making it a popular choice for destination weddings. Just make sure your paperwork is in order and you’re good to go!
Q: How soon can we get married after deciding to do so?
A: It’s best to give around 6 weeks' notice to allow plenty of time for your forms to be processed and all the paperwork to go through without a hitch. That said, if you’re in a big hurry (we know how love works!), the legal side can sometimes be completed in as little as 29 days. If you’re planning a whirlwind wedding, it’s worth giving the registry office a call just to make sure you’re covered for your specific dates.
Q: Is it possible to get married on a Sunday?
A: Yes, you can have your wedding on any day of the week here in Scotland, including Sundays. This flexibility means you can choose the date that suits you best—whether that’s a quiet weekday ceremony or a Sunday celebration.
Q: How long does a typical wedding ceremony last, and does it differ between religious and civil ceremonies?
A: The length of your wedding ceremony can vary depending on whether you opt for a religious or a civil service. Ceremonies led by a minister are usually a bit longer—think around 25 minutes or so, though this can change depending on the minister and any extra readings or personal touches you include. Civil ceremonies conducted by a registrar tend to be quite brief, often lasting just 10–15 minutes. After your vows, you'll need a little extra time to sign the official documents with your witnesses, which generally adds another 5 to 10 minutes.
Types of Wedding Ceremonies: Religious vs Civil
You have two options when it comes to your wedding ceremony at Gretna Green: a religious service or a civil ceremony.
-
Religious ceremonies are conducted by a minister and tend to be a bit more personal. They often include some lovely Gretna Green traditions—for example, striking the anvil at the end of your vows—and you can usually add your own special touches.
You can choose to have your iconic anvil ceremony in a variety of charming settings, such as the Coach House, Courtyard Room, or a cozy cottage. Or, if you’re drawn to history, you’re just a five-minute stroll from the world-renowned Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where ceremonies are held in the Original Marriage Room or the new Forge Marriage Room. This unique flexibility means you can tailor your day to perfectly match your vision, whether you prefer an intimate gathering or a grand celebration surrounded by tradition. Contact the minister about fees.
-
Civil ceremonies are performed by a registrar and are generally shorter and more straightforward, keeping to the legal essentials. The fee for a registrar is higher and depends on the day, it is often more on a Sundays or Bank Holidays. These costs include the marriage notice and certificate as well.
Both options are popular with couples looking for something meaningful but a little different, and it’s completely up to you and your partner which style feels right for your special day.
